Jan Marini Skin Research recently launched an exceptional antioxidant cocktail featuring Vitamin C & DMAE for powerful free-radical protection – C-ESTA® Serum.  I am honored to have been chosen to try this out for free in exchange for my honest review.  FYI C-ESTA Serum and Marini Physical Protectant were used in a recent study Published in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology (JDD). Split-Face Vitamin C Consumer Preference Study, Leslie Baumann, MD, Deysi K. Duque, MS, Michael J. Schirripa, PhD. 2014; 13(10): 1208-1213

Great for all skin types, C-ESTA Serum is a powerful antioxidant cocktail, featuring Vitamin C and DMAE, shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and uneven skin texture. Preferred by subjects in a blinded split-face study vs. a leading Vitamin C solution, C-ESTA Serum is the preferred Vitamin C and antioxidant solution for younger, healthier looking skin.

Key Ingredients

Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C)

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a naturally occurring drug with multiple desirable effects, essential to collagen production, so that it can aid in the growth of cells of blood vessels, skin, joints and ligaments, giving skin its firmness and strength. Vitamin C also helps your skin repair itself and is an antioxidant, which slows the rate of free-radical damage.  Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles – all signs of aging.  New research shows that Ascorbyl Palmitate, a derivative of vitamin C, also reverses DNA damage.  Research has shown us that vitamin C may also have anti-inflammatory effects, therefore reducing sunburn caused by exposure to ultraviolet B radiation and preventing the consequences of long-term sun exposure, which can lead to premature aging as well as skin cancer.  It also treats hyperpigmentation (dark spots or uneven skin tone).

DMAE

DMAE (also known as dimethylaminoethanol) is a compound produced naturally in small amounts in the brain and found in salmon, anchovies, and sardines.

Used in skincare products, it helps improve the appearance of wrinkles, dark undereye circles, sagging neck skin, and other anti-aging benefits. A 2005 research review from the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology states that DMAE may help increase skin firmness and limits inflammation in the skin. In their analysis of previously published research on the use of DMAE in skincare, the review’s authors found that DMAE also may help lessen fine wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, thereby improving the overall appearance of aging skin. DMAE does not appear to cause common side effects, such as redness, peeling, and dryness.

Hyaluronic Acid

As the skin is exposed to UV rays (sun damage) and time (aging), it’s ability to maintain youthful levels of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) diminishes, which then leads to volume loss and visible signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.   HA is a critical part of healthy, youthful looking skin that’s full of volume and hydration.

Hyaluronic acid is one of nature’s most water-loving molecules, and it’s role in tissue hydration help to support supple, smooth skin as well as provide lubrication to joints and eyes.**  Collagen and HA work in harmony in the body.  Collagen provides the mechanical strength of connective tissues, and HA serves to lubricate these tissues.

HA facts:

Holds 1000 times its weight in water for cushioning of the joints

Clinically shown to increase skin hydration

Aids in cell turnover

Lubricates the eye’s surface

Vitamin B5

Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) is widely found in both plants and animals including meat, vegetables, cereal grains, legumes, eggs, and milk.   It is commercially available as D-pantothenic acid, as well as dexpanthenol and calcium pantothenate, which are chemicals made in the lab from D-pantothenic acid.  It is a water-binding substance that attracts and retains water.  As a humectant, provitamin B5 stabilizes the skin barrier function, reducing the amount of water that is lost through the skin. By applying provitamin B5 to the skin, you will not only increase its hydration but improve its softness and elasticity, making provitamin B5 ideal for the treatment of dry, scaly or rough skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant, so it neutralize free radicals and prevents cellular damage from occurring in the skin. This means it can prevent premature aging of your skin and damage to your DNA.  Unfortunately, your body can’t produce it, which means you have to make sure you’re getting enough of this valuable nutrient in your diet or in your skincare products.

Normal DryOilyAcne-ProneSensitive

How to Use

Shake bottle well. Apply sparingly morning and evening to clean skin. Apply over entire face, neck and behind ears.

As you can see, the bottle says “Step2,” which means it should be the second step in your skincare regimen, right after cleansing.  You may follow this step with a resurfacing product, a hydrating product, and then a protecting product if you prefer.

I found it to be very easy to apply and very light weight.  I have combination skin, so I worry about large pores, shiny and greasy skin, and some hyperpigmentation. This product helped minimize my pores while balancing my skin’s oil production so I wasn’t walking around looking shiny.  The redness around my nose and chin improved greatly. I highly recommend you try this.  It also helps with any sun damage you may have on your neck or décolleté, which often show signs of aging before your face does!
