In case you missed it, most conventional deodorants contain aluminum, but aluminum has been associated with a variety of health issues, including:
Breast Cancer
Alzheimer’s Disease
Bone Disorders
Kidney Problems
Aluminum-free deodorants should consist of essential oils and all natural ingredients. Aluminum free alone may not be enough as some aluminum-free deodorants are still high risk, according to the Environmental Working Group, and can contain toxic chemicals like triclosan and propylene glycol, so avoid products with these ingredients.
Another thing to keep in mind is the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants. Antiperspirants (look at the label and it will tell you which one it is) block you from sweating and clog your pores, whereas deodorants let you sweat but kill the bacteria that causes odors.
I tried the Lemongrass Deodorant made by Untamed Natural Care ($6) and I loved it. It is made with Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Vitamin E, Arrowroot Powder, Bentonite Clay, Tea Tree and other essential oils. The lemongrass aroma is light and citrus-like, very pleasant, and the aroma stayed with me all day, even through two hours at the gym! It goes on clear! Let it dry before getting dressed, though.
Lemongrass would be my first ingredient in a natural deodorant because of it’s unique properties. The primary chemical component in lemongrass is citral which has strong anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties, perfect for inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bugs in your pits, feet, groin, or wherever you decide to apply the deodorant.
Lemongrass is high in anti-oxidant minerals, folic acid and essential vitamins such as pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), thiamin (vitamin B-1), vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, zinc, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, and magnesium.
Lemongrass aromatherapy restores and revitalizes the whole body, helping to relieve the symptoms of headaches, body-aches, nervous exhaustion and stress-related conditions. I did notice that I dealt with stress much easier when I had the lemongrass deodorant on. Many people use lemongrass as a calming agent to help them deal with anxiety and nervousness, or even insomnia.
Lemongrass may also have effects on cancer cells. There are many studies online and in medical journals illustrating how lemongrass kills cancer cells without harming normal cells.
Untamed Natural Care makes 3 different Deodorant Varieties:
