If you’re looking to improve your health, I recommend trying Yoga.  Yoga is a series of movements and breathing exercises that are great for people of all ages.  You can find some beginner yoga classes at your local fitness facility or even online.  Yoga has many benefits, and here are my top 5 reasons for recommending Yoga.


To get started, make sure you get a nice yoga mat. Remember your teacher telling you to stop slouching?  It turns out that poor posture is linked with chronic headaches, muscle and joint pains, and muscle weakness.   Through practicing the various yoga poses, you will strengthen your abdominal muscles to maintain a pose, therefore significantly strengthen your core, making it easier to straighten your back and rid yourself of that hump back.

The Harvard Mental Health Letter  states “Available reviews of a wide range of yoga practices suggest they can reduce the impact of exaggerated stress responses and may be helpful for both anxiety and depression. In this respect, yoga functions like other self-soothing techniques, such as meditation, relaxation, exercise, or even socializing with friends. By reducing perceived stress and anxiety, yoga appears to modulate stress response systems. This, in turn, decreases physiological arousal — for example, reducing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and easing respiration. There is also evidence that yoga practices help increase heart rate variability, an indicator of the body’s ability to respond to stress more flexibly.

A small but intriguing study done at the University of Utah provided some insight into the effect of yoga on the stress response by looking at the participants’ responses to pain. The researchers noted that people who have a poorly regulated response to stress are also more sensitive to pain. Their subjects were 12 experienced yoga practitioners, 14 people with fibromyalgia (a condition many researchers consider a stress-related illness that is characterized by hypersensitivity to pain), and 16 healthy volunteers.”

  1. Would beginners videos on YouTube be a good place to start learning yoga? I’ve been wanting to try it but have no clue how to start.
