Do You Have Survival Food Storage To Carry You During A Disaster?

If you are in a shelter, planning to stay in a shelter, or are even considering the possibility of getting stuck on the road, then food and water is your first priority in any disaster situation. You can make it without electricity and without much comfort for the creatures, but you cannot survive without food and water.

Storing food in an emergency need not be complicated or expensive. It can even consist mainly of things that your family already eats. Before you go out and buy all the water, bread and milk you can get your hands on, you should consider how long you want to prepare for it. In the event of a natural disaster, it can be a good idea to have at least a week’s supply of food and water. Remember that not only will you have to survive the storm itself, but it may take a little longer for help and supplies to reach you.

Start with your water supply. Hopefully you will still have running water, but do not rely on it being your only source of drinking water. Buy water bottles, or refill milk jugs, soda bottles and the like to make sure you have enough clean water to drink safely for a few days. You can last much longer without food than without water. This should be your number one priority.

Next, think about non-perishable food that your family will eat. Choose foods that you can eat as they are. Crackers and peanut butter are a good choice, as are canned beans, soups and the like. Canned tuna or chicken is an excellent source of protein. Bread is another good choice besides your favourite non-perishable sandwich topping. Don’t forget things like cereal bars, protein bars, nuts or dried meat, which you can eat straight from the package.

If you have an outdoor camping stove or barbecue, you may also be able to heat and cook some food. Instant oatmeal, coffee, hot chocolate mix, soups and even instant rice are great options if you have the ability to heat water when the power goes out.

Last but not least, stock up on some favorite foods such as chocolate, chips, pretzels, cookies and the like. This makes it a little bit more bearable to survive these hard days of disaster.

Start with a list of things you know your family will eat and things you will consume, even if you don’t need them during a disaster. From there, start rounding them off with things that will keep you full and healthy, and take them in as needed. For example, you regularly eat canned vegetable or chicken noodle soup, but you are not a big fan of tuna. Always keep a small supply of the soups in your pantry (and roll through them if necessary), and take a few cans of tuna with you if you need it.

Talk to your family about your survival stock and let them share in what you should keep in stock and store. This will give them a sense of control and responsibility and of course ensure that everyone is happy with the available meals when things get serious.
