If you have not exercised for a while or are looking for something easy, you can try walking every day. It’s the perfect way to exercise with little stress. It’s easy to do, you don’t need any special equipment and you can start at the fitness level you are at.
If you are not in the best shape, start with a 10 or 15 minute walk through the neighborhood and work your way up from there. If you are already in good shape, walking can still be an effective workout. Walk quickly and take a few hills and even stairs.
But let’s not be hasty here. If you’re like most of us, chances are you haven’t trained much since you graduated college and will have to start small. Maybe your doctor has suggested that you should exercise more, or maybe you just want to be proactive about your health and well-being. In either case, walking is the perfect way to start.
Find a pair of comfortable shoes, put them on and take a walk around your neighbourhood. You might also find a local park with a nice path to walk along. If the weather doesn’t allow you to walk outside, go to your local shopping mall and walk or hop on a treadmill.
You can even walk on the spot at home in front of your TV. Here is a simple little idea to get you more exercise. When you’re sitting on the sofa watching TV in the evening, get up during commercial breaks and march in place until your favorite show is on again. If you use a service like Netflix, you should walk for 10 minutes between episodes. Or turn on the TV and ask yourself to march in place throughout the show. Time will fly by while you have fun watching TV and moving around.
Speaking of having fun: a walk in the open air can also be a lot of fun. Mix your route and go for a walk in different parts of the city or visit different parks. Invite a friend to go for a walk with you. It is always nice to have someone to talk to, and a walking companion will keep you informed. Finally, grab your phone or MP3 player and listen to music or audio books during the walk to make the time go faster.
The main thing is to go outside, move around and exercise in a way that is easy on your joints, heart, and the rest of your body, and that is what walking will do for you. Just give it a try and see if after a few weeks of regular walking you don’t start to feel better, happier, and stronger.
