I love the morning. Every new day brings new opportunities and it is a chance to start over and do better. How you start the day, or more precisely, how you spend the first few hours of the morning, has a great influence on the rest of the day. Consider it as setting the tone for your whole day. That is why it is so important to get through the morning. It is about much more than the first few hours.
I am sure you have experienced this yourself. Let’s take the snooze button as an example. You set an early alarm to make sure you have time for exercise, meditation or just some much needed “me time”. You have the firm intention of getting up and doing what you set out to do when you set the alarm in the first place. Some mornings – hopefully most mornings – you will get up when the alarm clock rings and go for a walk, do your meditation practice or read a book for twenty minutes. Then there are days when you just can’t bring yourself to get up. You press the snooze button several times or turn the alarm clock off completely and go back to sleep.
Think about how the rest of these days went. Have you noticed any difference in your feelings? How much did you do in the morning when you got up with your first alarm? Were you able to do all the things you had planned to do? How were those days compared to the days when you kept pressing the snooze button?
If I had to guess, I would say that the days when you got up in the morning as soon as the alarm clock rang were much quieter. I bet you also achieved what you had planned. Chances are that sleeping through the snooze button not only affected your morning, but the rest of the day as well. You set the tone for how your day will go tomorrow morning. That’s what the old saying about getting up on the wrong side of the bed is all about. Let’s make sure we get up on the right side and start our day in a positive and productive way.
Over the next seven days I would like to guide you through the process of getting up in the morning. As we have already stated, this is an important task and a good thing to work on and pay attention to. Not only will you enjoy your morning more, even if the alarm clock goes off much earlier than you would like, but it will also make the rest of the day much more enjoyable.
