How to Shampoo Your Hair in the Winter

The very first thing you need to do when caring for your hair in winter is to pay attention to how you shampoo it. This means paying attention to what you shampoo with and how often you shampoo. Many people use the same shampoo year round and wash their hair every day, but depending on your hair type, this can cause damage, frizz, and more dryness than you might have.

Wash your hair less often

To start, make sure you don’t wash your hair too often. Even if you like to wash your hair every day or every other day in the warmer months, this can cause damage in the winter. You’re dealing with dry air in the winter, which already takes some of the moisture out of your hair, especially on dry, windy days. If you have dry hair, this can lead to hair breakage and thinning.

Instead, try to wash your hair every 2-3 days if possible. People with particularly dry hair can get by with just one shampoo a week. If you’re worried about oil or grease on the top of your head between shampoos, try spraying on a little dry shampoo and it will make a drastic difference.

Change your shampoo

If you struggle with dry hair in the winter, you should also change the type of shampoo you use. There are moisturizing shampoos that may not be the best choice at other times of the year when it’s humid and your hair is already hydrated, but in the winter, you need as much moisture as possible. Also, use a shampoo that is sulfate-free so it doesn’t strip your hair of the oils it needs.

Lower the water temperature

While you’re shampooing your hair, you should also be mindful of how much heat you use. Hot water is great when you’re taking a nice, relaxing bath, but it’s not ideal for your hair. The hot water will strip your hair of much-needed moisture and make it drier. Instead, reduce the water to a lukewarm or cool temperature when you rinse out your shampoo.

Let your hair dry first

The last tip for washing your hair in winter is related to what you do after you wash and condition your hair. Every time you get out of the shower, you should give your hair some time to dry before you leave the house. Either use a blow dryer with cool air or low heat, or just let it air dry. For people with curly or frizzy hair, wrapping it in a cotton t-shirt is a good way to let it dry without making it more frizzy.
