How Random Acts of Kindness Don’t Have to Be Complicated or Expensive

One thing I have learned on the way to acquiring the ability to perform random acts of kindness is that it requires practice and creativity. I have already shown you some ways to begin your own world-improvement practice, but perhaps you are still not convinced. Doing something for others need not require much effort at all. It does not have to cost a cent either. Let’s look at some of the ways in which you can easily reach out and make someone’s day better. You can never have too many good examples.

  • Smile at a stranger.
  • Encourage someone who is in trouble.
  • Give a word of praise to someone who least expects it, like your boss.
  • Have the elevator ready for someone who is in a hurry.
  • Read a story to a child.
  • Listen to someone’s complaint.
  • Say thank you very much.
  • Share a friend’s creative work in social media.
  • Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time just to say hello.
  • Leave a blog comment when you read a post that really appeals to you.
  • Offer a homeless person your leftover food from a restaurant or a grocery bag.
  • Tell a frazzled parent what a good job they’re doing or how well their child is behaving.
  • Give someone a hug when they say it’s okay to do this.
  • Offer to return someone’s shopping cart back to the corral.
  • Speak a friendly word with the account manager, either on the phone or in person.
  • Give your seat to someone on the subway or bus.
  • Write a short message of thanks or encouragement to an employee, your partner or a stranger who happens to be present.
  • Greet a homeless person.
  • Introduce yourself to a new neighbor or work colleague.
  • Make introductions between your contacts if you think they could benefit from each other or get along well.
  • Let someone get in front of you when you are driving in heavy traffic.
  • Offer someone to do their job when you have time and they seem overwhelmed.
  • Give someone a lift who does not have a car.
  • Offer to make amends for past wrongs to someone who was once in your life.
  • Agree to an activity that you may not like just because someone else loves it.
  • Invite someone to your holiday party when you know they’ll be alone.
  • Share your expertise with someone who has questions and has asked for advice.
  • Write a recommendation on LinkedIn.
  • Offer to pick up items for others when you’re heading out to grab lunch or run an errand.
  • Recognize someone for their good idea or contribution during a work meeting.

Okay, are you ready to get out there and start sharing random acts of kindness? These are all super easy, effortless, and free ways to make someone’s day. You can do it!
